Apply for an aviation reference number (ARN). This is similar to an account or customer number and will need to be quoted whenever you communicate with us. If you're an individual, you will need to submit Form 1162. Make sure you have your identification when you call us. Find out more about ARNs and identification requirements.
These are issued to individuals and organisations that are a legal entity. They cannot be issued to business names, consortiums or partnerships.
For those with no aviation experience
Before you can get your licence, you will need training to fly your drone. The training you need will depend on whether you have aviation experience.
If you have no aviation experience, you will need to complete a training course offered by an approved training organisationthat holds a ReOC.
These training courses comprise theory and operational training.
If you want to operate in controlled airspace or outside visual line of sight, you will also need an aircraft radio operators licence (AROC). Some training providers may include this in their training course.
If you do not get your AROC, a restriction will be placed on your remote pilot licence (RePL). You can apply to have this removed once you have completed the necessary training.
For those with aviation experience
If you have aviation experience, you must satisfy these requirements:
- A pass in the theory component of a Part 61 flight crew liences (such as a PPL, CPL, ATPL or RPL). You satisfy this requirement if you have a flight crew licence, an equivalent military qualification, an air traffic control licence (or equivalent). International qualifications will be recognised where we are satisfied that it is equivalent to the theory component of a RePL training course. We may charge a fee if we need to compare the two syllabi.
- Complete an operational training course with an approved training organisation, or undertake a CASA flight test.
- You will also need to complete five hours flying your drone under standard operating conditions. You will need to submit your flight log with your application.
Complete Form 101-01 and submit it to the Client Services Centre together with all supporting documentation. Further information on these requirements are contained in our information on applying for your RePL document.
Your licence is not subject to renewal, but you will be expected to have documented currency requirements.
