Step 3: Get permission to fly

For some operations, you will need permission to fly under the drone safety rules (set out in Civil Aviation Safety Regulations Part 101). Depending on where you intend to fly, we might require a safety case and risk assessment.

  • To operate within 3 nm of a controlled aerodrome (civil or military).
  • To operate within the movement area of a controlled aerodrome.
  • To operate within the movement area of a non-controlled aerodrome.

Flight authorisation permissions may take more than 21 days to complete once we receive payment.

  • Above 400ft AGL in controlled airspace.
  • Above 400ft AGL outside controlled airspace.
  • Beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS)^.
  • To operate within a restricted area where CASAis the controlling authority (see below for separate process for operations within R405A and R405B).

Flight authorisation area approvals can take 7 - 28 days to complete once we receive payment. .



^BVLOS applications may take longer as this requires coordination with the CASA Office of Airspace Regulation.
